I recently went to go see Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale in theaters.
//takes cover from the incoming shitstorm//

But seriously, most of you guys are probably putting it down already because it's a part of the SAO franchise. SAO is certainly not the best anime out there and it could've been executed better, but doesn't mean it still doesn't have a chance. I decided not to judge it until I watched it, but now that I have, I think it was great.

The movie introduces a new concept called Augma, an augmented reality device that becomes all the rage as virtual reality declines in popularity. Asuna is skilled at it's most popular MMORPG game, Ordinal Scale, unlike Kirito who seems to have no interest in it at all. It's nice to see that for once Kirito is no longer OP while Asuna gets time to shine as a talented and capable person (at least in the beginning). The movie focuses a lot more on their relationship as well, showing that the SAO incident was a traumatizing experience for many but also an important one for people like Kirito and Asuna.

The animation was beautiful, as expected of A-1 Pictures. The last fight scene was especially memorable; I still don't understand how the animators pulled off such a thing. The music was amazing as well, with Ordinal Scale’s theme song “Catch the Moment” serving as an emotionally inspiring piece that added dramatic weight.

I was really happy that we finally got to see the main characters with their SAO outfits back
—their ALO outfits were terrible. The movie also hinted at the very end a season 3, presumed to be the Alicization Arc (which I'm hella excited for).

Of course, that's not to say this movie was without its flaws. The movie should've took more time to develop Kirito instead of making him once again OP in mere minutes. Klein remained as a side character and Asuna still ended up being the "damsel in distress". And we needed more Sinon screen time.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. If you're an SAO fan, you'll love it. If you're an SAO hater, you'll hate it. But if you enjoyed any part of the SAO franchise, whether it be the action or the romance, you'll find something to enjoy in this movie.
